Caltech Brexit Update

Caltech Electrical Supplies BREXIT Planning

Following a protracted process, the UK will no longer be a member of the EU come the 1st January 2021.

The transition agreement signed nearly one year ago will expire at 12 midnight on December 31, 2020.

Although there is still uncertainty as to if there will be an agreement reached between the two economic markets, we must plan on the basis that there may not be an agreement reached and plan based on the worst case scenario

We believe it is vitally important to communicate to you, our customers, what we anticipate the impact of a “no deal” Brexit and/or any Brexit will have on our deliveries and lead times after January 1, 2021.

We have been in regular contact with our UK and European based suppliers with regards to their plans for Brexit. These suppliers have identified the measures they have put in place to deal with expected logistical issues that will be posed by a hard Brexit. Alternative shipping routes have been identified as well as a plan to hold additional stocks in Ireland for the first quarter of 2021.

There is, however, no doubt that Brexit will cause a large amount of disruption in Q1 of 2021, regardless of a Hard Brexit or not. We anticipate that lead times will be adversely affected right throughout this period. This will include European deliveries that use the UK as a land-bridge to Ireland.

For now, we ask that you build in additional transit time by road / sea of at least 5 working days to your materials planning & purchasing.
We also believe that it will also take express orders an additional 2-3 days to make their way through the logistics chain.

We kindly ask all customers to keep this in mind when placing orders and understand that our staff will do all they can to help with orders throughout this period.

If possible, we ask you to order what you can between now and the middle of December for projects and works for January in particular. If you are in a position to do so, please build up stocks and inventory for a 6-week period. Over the coming weeks there will be an increased demand for products, and this in itself will lead to additional lead times.

At Caltech, we have identified some core products that service the day to day needs of our customers. We will be carrying additional stock holdings of these products that we believe will assist in covering the first 6-8 weeks of Q1 2021.
We will be placing all stock orders between now and early December with a view to ensuring a full stock holding come the 1st January 2021.

We are continuing to liaise with our suppliers to identify and put in place measures that will ensure a continuity of service throughout this period. We will update this page when any additional information comes to light.

Some of these suppliers have further details on their measures taken and plans to deal with Brexit and you can see these below.
